Paulownia tansu (Japanese antique chest) B0046

A paulownia tansu (Japanese antique chest) clad in a black as if soaked deep in sumi ink.

The whole piece was sanded and the damaged areas repaired. After adjusting the drawers and doors, it was finished with sumi-black paint.
The sides of the drawers and the interior revealed when the doors are opened are painted fresh green. This colored part cannot be seen while the drawers and doors are closed; it appears only when they are opened.

The front has round metal fittings, drawer pulls, cross-shaped fittings, copper handles and other fittings placed throughout, making this a tansu worth a close look. The fittings have a keyhole, but there is no key.
Inside the door at the lower right of the front are two drawers. If you pull out all the lower drawers, there is a hidden paulownia box behind them, which can be used as a secret storage box.

A tansu that is fun for its striking metal fittings and the fresh green peeking out from the jet-black body.
