Shonai tansu (Japanese Shonai chest) G0004
A two-tier tansu reimagined from a Shonai tansu made around the Meiji era.
A circle of gold leaf was added to the front, finished in a random pattern that keeps its wrinkles and flaking, and protected with clear urethane. The black on the front, which had deteriorated, was repainted with urethane and lightly aged. The metal fittings are original and have only been cleaned.
The hand-forged iron fittings feature three-dimensional designs of pine, bamboo and plum, tigers, karajishi (Chinese lions) with peonies, and cranes and tortoises, in a different combination on each fitting.
The insides of the drawers have been sanded and cleaned. Cracks that came with age have been repaired with wooden inlays.
Three keys are included (for the drawers and for the door; each opens a different part).
The upper and lower sections are simply stacked and can be separated.
As this is an old piece, it has fine scratches and signs of age.
