Vermilion circle paulownia tansu (Japanese chest of drawers) B0132
A cabinet remade from an old paulownia tansu.
The wood, whose tonoko (powder-based) finish had deteriorated, was sanded to expose the bare wood.
It was then finished with a clear coat that leaves the simple, natural surface of the paulownia as it is.
It looks and feels the same as unpainted wood.
The panels of the sliding doors have been replaced with clear glass so the inside can be seen.
The metal fittings keep their rich, aged appearance, shaped by many years.
The base is made of iron in matte black.
Adjusters on the underside let you correct any wobble on the floor.
The vermilion circle set on top is made of wood, finished to a mirror shine by carefully repeating cashew lacquer coating and polishing.
Its deep, lacquer-like gloss pairs with the simple surface of the paulownia.
The joints have been repaired, and the sliding doors and drawers have been adjusted.
One key for the drawers is included (shared by all three).
As this is an old piece, it has fine scratches and signs of age.
[Please note]
The body, vermilion circle and base are assembled as one and fixed in place, and cannot be taken apart.
The carrying-pole fittings (sao-doshi) on the left and right sides can be pulled out, but because the piece is heavy, please do not lift the body by these fittings.
When moving it, always use two or more people, and lift the paulownia tansu body from underneath, as there is a risk of getting your hand caught on the edge of the base.
