Mogami tansu (Japanese Mogami chest) C0611

A cedar Mogami tansu (Japanese Mogami chest).
Large, three-dimensional peony-shaped metal fittings give it an outstanding presence.
The decorative fittings (kazari-kanagu) were each hammered out one by one by a craftsman with a chisel (tagane), and are works of art in their own right.
Using these fittings so generously, this chest has an overwhelming impact.

In our own workshop, we repaired damaged areas such as cracks in the wood. We then planed the entire wooden body to prepare the surface and finished it with new paint. All the metal fittings were removed, polished and repainted as well.
The drawers and doors have also been carefully adjusted.

This chest comes with three original keys from the time it was made.
